Magazine industry

Brand identity: How a business presents itself and how it wants to be perceived by customers.

What essential aspects must be considered when a magazine constructs its brand identity?

  • Constructing their own target audience.
  • Brand loyalty- customers buying from the same brand over and over again.
  • Selling specific adverts for a specific audience.

Brand identity:
Woman magazine-

  • Classic look, plain woman.
  • Magazine is targeted towards working class this could be because the lexis is casual.
  • There is more text on the page- could be seen as trashy.
  • Some of the text is covering her picture, implying that the women on the cover isn't important. I
  • Its a cheaper magazine (seven pence- about 80p).
  • The model looks naive but friendly this is due to her smile.
  • Her smile looks forced because it seems overdone and fake- it is passive.
  • The big text for the title is what they use to draw in the audience.
  • Price is in bigger text, so the audience can clearly see how much it costs.
  • Laid back lexis.
  • Woman on the cover is approachable and maternal.
  • Friendly mode of adress.

Vogue-

  • Glamorous, exotic, wealthy.
  • The woman on the cover is a well known actress from the 60's.
  • Lexis is more formal, implying that its targeted towards middle class and is a more serious magazine.
  • The woman on the cover, Sophia Lorene, can be seen as aspirational to women because they want to be like her.
  • The model's outfit isn't a "normal" outfit, showing that she's superior to other women.
  • She's not looking into the camera or smiling implying that she knows she's better than others.
  • Its an expensive magazine (three shillings- about £1.70).
  • There are regal connotations of the colour blue showing that the model is well off.
  •  Sophia Lorene looks confident and intelligent.
  • The colour of the title blends in with Sophia's outfit. This shows that the magazine is only made for people who are aware of its existence. The photo of the famous actress is what draws the audience in.
  • Price is hidden- could be because its targeted for wealthy people and if someone has to ask for the price then they can't afford it.
  • Its an exclusionary magazine- theres an emphasis on the model.
  • Use of good vocabulary- "scintillate." This is a restricted lexis, only those with a good education could understand.
  • Exotic colours.
  • Bold, exclusive lexis.
