Power and Media Industries Conglomerate: A large corporation consisting of multiple smaller companies. (Disney is an example of a media conglomerate). Subsidiary: A smaller company owned by a large corporation. Disney owns Marvel, Abc, Pixar, ESPA, Walt Disney studios and vice. Disney bought out some of these companies to widen their target audiences. News Corp owns The Sun, 20th Century Fox, Fox TV, iTV, Sky TV, National Geographic and Harper Collins Publishers. They've almost formed a monopoly. Advantages of forming a Monopoly: You can remove competition. Audience manipulation. Extends the range of business connections. More prestige.  Gain profit and power. Disadvantages of forming a monopoly: Lack of diversity. Conglomerates and monopoly: Having a monopoly dominates multiple media industries. What advantages are there to a newspaper demonstrating a particular political/ ideological bias? To control people and change their political beliefs. Ideologies will attract more audience. Gain support from a political party. Why would a newspaper wish to manipulate the ideology of it's target audience? Tabloid vs broadsheet newspapers Traditionally, newspapers were split between tabloids and broadsheets, broadsheets being the larger, more serious papers that you had to fold to read.  Now most newspapers are printed at the same size, but the broadsheet and tabloid values remain in place.  Tabloid is more gossip whereas a broadsheet is "actual news". A tabloid focuses more on the "silly" stuff like celebrity gossip. Broadsheet focuses on the news that people need to know (more political and worldwide issues). Expectations of women in society: Wear make up (to make one look pretty/ attractive). Slim bodies. Key theory 8 Lisbet Van Zoonen- Gender theory Women's bodies are there to be looked at (stereotypically), whereas the male body differs from those used to objectify the female body.  How are women constructed on the mail online? She's described as "Justin Beiber's ex," making it seem like she wouldn't be important if it wasn't for dating Beiber.  There are close up pictures of her boobs and butt, which may appeal to a heterosexual male audience or homosexual female audience.  The way they describe her body is sexual and even pervy, something that can be used in a porn magazine.  This confirms a hegemonic standard of women's beauty. This cultivates the ideology that women should look a specific way.
