Different perspectives

Why do producers use representations?

  • To target an audience.
  • To present an ideology about something.
  • To manipulate the audience (links into cultivation theory).
  • Entertainment value.
  • Financial reasons (to make money).
  • Narrative.
Exam questions.

Point
Media language (supporting the point).
Argument (deeper analysis of this point).
Theoretical perspective (used to confirm point of view).

"Man held after toddler dies in hammer attack."

  • The title is in big writing, to grab the reader's attention.
  • They have been blunt by using the word "dies," to show what happened to the child.
  • They use the word "toddler," to show the audience that someone young and innocent has been taken away long before his time. This may make people feel sympathetic towards the child.
  • The word "toddler," is informal, showing the audience that this is a tabloids paper.
  • The subheading is a lot smaller than the heading, to show that the twin sister being in a critical position isn't as important as the twin brother dying.
  • Theres a picture of the parents of the child looking romantic. This could have been a "normal" state of equilibrium because everything in their life seemed okay back then, but then a disruption was caused, when the father allegedly killed the baby, casing an unequal state of equilibrium.
  • There is a close up picture of the toddler who died. This can be used to make the audience feel sympathetic towards him and make them feel like angry over what happened.
  • The twin sister's picture has been blurred out, showing that this really is a serious issue and that she needs to have her privacy.
  • The father of the twins is non-white person. This confirms that he is different and it may anger people into thinking of racist stereotypes.
  • Othering: It's the same and it's different, he's Indian but there should be no reason to mention it. His race/ ethnicity shouldn't have anything to do with being a murderer.
  • Negative representation of working class people.
  • Referential code: typical love story- things going wrong/ dilemma.
  • The hammer attack has references to a slasher film.
  • Hammer attack sounds brutal and insensitive.
  • Proairetic code: policeman going to the house to arrest someone.
  • Equilibrium: the loving couple.
  • Disequilibrium (the climax): Todorov (the husband) killing the baby with a hammer.

The Today Show- Radio 4
  • Most of the headlines relate to political stories (both British and worldwide stories).
  • This suggests that the target audience may be middle class, middle aged people because the headlines are the kind of stories used in a broadsheet newspaper rather than a tabloid newspaper.
  • They use words like "suspected" and "attempted."
  • The voiceover speaks with an RP accent (an accent associated with middle/ upper class people).
  • They mentioned the political broadsheet stories before mentioning the death of the baby.
  • The story of the murder is very short therefore the producer's ideologies are that politics is more important than the death of a child.
  • They didn't mention the ethnicity of the murderer.
  • The story was short and blunt (they only mentioned the key points but didn't go into details).
  • They discussed the part about the male being charged more than the baby dying.
  • The wife of the murderer (mother of the twins) wasn't mentioned in the story, showing that she's irrelevant to the story.
Social media comments to do with the news story:
  • One reason why newspapers post on social media is because it helps them go viral, also the comments can tell the story and the newspaper can't tell the whole story due to political reasons whereas people in the comments can.
