- Late night women's hour is a spin off from the long running BBC radio 4 daily magazine program, women's hour.
- Broadcasts once a month, late at night, presented by Lauren Laverne and features a number of female panelists.
- Each episode focuses on a particular theme relevant to it's female audience.
- Broadcasted Friday nights at 11pm.
- Has a niche audience.
Late Night Women's hour:
- Cultural- talking about Danish culture, food, social norms, inclusive.
- British culture is expanding, the domestic.
- Target audience- middle class, middle age women.
- Digital culture.
- Craft- homemade, handmade- domestic.
- Food- home cooking, collective element (Danish).
- Focus on Ikea, "i knew my marriage was over when he bought a wardrobe from Ikea"- snobby.
- Home as a sanctuary- historical references, gender roles.
- Middle class- posh accents and big words (e.g: democratisation).
- Lauren Laverne- Northern- working class accent but uses long, complex lexis.
- Style of show= magazine show, deals with different subjects every week like a magazine.
- Round table discussion- no one shouts over each other, it's professional and gentle (they laugh at each other's jokes and respect what they say).
- Egalitarian- theres equality between the panelists and host.
- "Hygge"- danish word for being comfy, often repeated in the show.
- "Winter mug"- they all agreed- very middle class.
- Mode of address is middle class, middle class women targeting a middle class female audience. e.g, being evicted is excited from a middle class perspective as its an "adventure"- working class can't relate."sofa surfing", "only 20 books"
- It paints a utopia (new/ perfect world) for women.
- Utopian solution- the idea that media creates the perfect world for the audience as their own lives are imperfect.
- The show can be viewed at sexist as theres only a female panel. As well as this, the show is about how much women love cooking, cleaning and talking about their emotions (stereotype).
- They compare men and their "masculinity" to women and their "feelings"- binary opposition between the two genders, emotional women and hardworking men.
- Regulated by OFCOM.
- The BBC is a PBS (public broadcasted service).
- Remit- the BBC have to have a range of shows that target a range of audiences.
- Nothing edgy or challenging about the show- they don't even talk about sex and sexuality.
- Started in 1946 (after ww2)- women show started then to pick morale back up as people were more depressed after war.
- Stuff on cooking and cleaning- "how to hang your husband's shirt."
- Used to start at around 2/3pm to fit around women's chores and picking up children from schools.
- Was moved to BBC in the 70's as TV was becoming more popular and there was a diversification of audience.
- Shown was seen as sexist towards both men and women.
- Show was criticised for being too middle class.
