Scene from Humans
  • proairetic code- Anita is the only one that moves.
  • hermeneutic code- Anita looks at the moon- whats going to happen?

Camera work (cinematography)
  • low angle shot of wheels taking the robots into lab setting
  • close up shot of phone
  • establishing shot of eye
  • Low angle shot of moon shinning through ceiling (its placed in the middle of the shot emphasising its importance)- links in with the codes and conventions of the episode.
  • long shot of the Hawkins family living room, showing the various family members sprawled out on their phones. stereotypes of children/ teens. emphasises the importance of technology in the show.
  • high angle long shot of the synth's in the factory emphasises the loneliness of their existence.
  • over the shoulder close up shots of male and female bodies, with the camera tracking slowing down on the female bodies. assumes a heterosexual male audience. however forces the audience into a voyeuristic position.
Lighting and colour
  • high key lighting in lab
  • Cold, blue colours, artificial LED lighting connoting unnaturalness and creating a creepy atmosphere. emphasised by the low key lighting.
  • binary opposition used in colours- first scene with synths in a factory uses dark, low key lighting and second scene with the Hawkins family uses bright colours, to show the difference between the two- humans and robots. this demonstrates the theme of conflict between the synths and the "real" people. (links in with the theme of the show).
Sound- dialogue and music
  • not a lot of sound in the first scene- wheels moving, footsteps and a door closing. all the sound in the first scene echoes a bit to emphasise how big the room is and
  • electronic "techno music" plays as Anita is powered on. non diegetic sound emphasises Anita is not only the protagonist but also unique compared to the other synths. (leitmotif).
  • Opening credits: all sound made using digital, synthetic music, artificial, establishes key themes to the audience.
  • intertextual reference: opening theme tune sounds like electronic music produced by bands like Daft Punk (referential codes- referring to bands like Daft punk gives the show vital context). this also demonstrates the show takes place in a very different world to ours.
Mise-en-scene
  • assorted news footage and articles- stock footage.
  • digital distortion overlaid over the stock-footage of the opening credits, further confirming the key message of the show: what is real?
Genre
  • genre fluidity- the way genre changes.
  • extreme close up of eye- reference to 2001 space odyssey and blade runner. referential codes relating to sci-fi films. the eye shows the emotion and humanity expressed by the robots.
